WACO, Texas – The No. 64 Oklahoma State women's tennis team dropped its match against No. 55 Alabama, 4-0, Sunday in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, moving to 1-3 in 2011.
Although the Cowgirls gave up the opening doubles point with losses at Nos. 1 and 2, the competition was close for the team point.
The Crimson Tide won the No. 2 match, 8-2, but OSU's Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Kanyapat Narattana led Alabama's ninth-ranked duo of Alexa Guarachi and Courtney Mclane, 7-4, at No. 1 and Cowgirls C.C. Sardinha and Malika Rose were in a back-and-forth match on the No. 3 court with No. 32-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane and Antonia Foehse.
Bama's No. 1 team showed their top 10 rank, however, winning five straight games to earn a 9-7 win and clinch the doubles team point. That also ended the close No. 3 match which could easily have gone to either team.
“After two tough losses the girls came out with great energy in doubles and were just a few points away from winning that point,” Young said. “Nat and Kanyapat played some of their best tennis to build a lead on one of the best teams in the country, but we backed off and they stepped up and took the point.”
The Tide made the most of their momentum earned from the doubles wins, capturing three two-set wins at Nos. 4, 2 and 6 singles to end the dual with a 4-0 win.
“In singles Alabama came out with all of the momentum and did a great job of being aggressive and it took too long for a few girls to get something going on their courts,” Young said.
OSU sophomore Malika Rose won her first set at No. 5 singles, 7-5, but was unable to finish the match as the dual ended.
“We knew this weekend was going to be tough,” Young said. “A good team was going to finish 0-2 and that happened to be us. Alabama almost knocked off Baylor last year, and they will be a force all season long, as will Rice. We have to just keep working, because our girls are improving and it's only a matter of time before we have our full lineup, and we will be a dangerous team at that point.”
Oklahoma State returns to action Feb. 4, taking on the Arkansas Razorbacks in Edmond, Okla.
