Cowboys Dominate Hurricane Invitational

TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma State cross country program started its season with a bang at the Hurricane Invitational Saturday, as the men's team went 5-0 in dual competition and the women's team fnished at 4-1.
"It was a great first day," coach Dave Smith said. "I was really impressed and pleased with how the guys ran. They were very competitive and they ran the race exactly how we talked about. I had a pretty good handle on how the guys would run, but the women were a little more of a question mark coming in and I was real pleased with the way they ran. Jori Davis is a freshman who really impressed me and Kate Kujawa was our No. 1 girl. Those two specifically impressed me."
On the men's side, a trio of Cowboys led the rest of the field across the line, as freshman Tom Farrell claimed first place in the four-mile run with a time of 19:54. Sophomore Ryan Prentice and junior Sean Fleming followed Farrell at second and third place, respectively.
The Cowboys also claimed dual wins over every school in the meet, including John Brown, Oklahoma, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Oral Roberts and Tulsa.
"It was good," first-place finisher Farrell said. "It was our first race out, so we decided to go easy for the first couple of miles and then see what happened. We just wanted to play the race by ear. I picked it up with about a mile and a half to go and it wasn't too bad. It felt good."
Oklahoma State also had a strong showing from the women's squad, who picked up dual wins over each school except first-place finisher Tulsa.
Anchoring the Cowgirls'finish in the two-mile race were Kate Kujawa and Jori Davis, who finished at third and ninth, respectively.
"I think it went really well," Kujawa said. "Our group was supposed to try and keep with the front pack for the first mile. For the second mile we just wanted to try and keep moving up, and that's exactly what I did. We started pretty conservative and brought it in hard. I went a little bit too early - (the Tulsa) girls seem to know the course pretty well and they were ready for me. I passed them but they waited a little bit and passed me back (in the final stretch). I felt good overall, though. This is a nice course and it's easy, flat and short. It was a good start to the season."
The Oklahoma State cross country program returns to action Sept. 25 for the Cowboy Jamboree at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater. The event is the oldest consecutively held cross country event in the country and is widely known for its top-level competition and history.
