Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's softball team opened the fall season with a sweep of Oklahoma Christian, defeating the Eagles 15-0 and 7-0 here Wednesday afternoon at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
The Cowgirl pitching staff gave up just two hits in 63 at-bats by Oklahoma Christian in the pair of games. Meanwhile, the OSU offense was dominating with 22 hits in the two contests.
In game one, the Cowgirls scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, including three on a three-run homer by junior Julie Ward. OSU added two more in the third, two in the fifth and one in the fifth before blowing the Eagles away with six runs in the sixth, including another bomb by Ward over the right-field fence.
Cowgirl sophomore hurler Kat Espinosa started the first game and threw four scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out five. Freshman Morgan Hawkins came on in relief in the fifth, throwing three shutout innings. OC nearly scored a run in the top of the seventh, but with two outs and a runner on third, right-fielder Sammy Jo Diffendaffer threw Ashley Paxton out at first to end the game.
In the second contest, leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart went 3-for-4 while centerfielder Kelsey Anchors hit a bases-loaded triple in a five-run third inning as the Cowgirls ran away from the Eagles.
Starting pitcher Simone Freeman, a freshman from Australia, threw four hitless innings, striking out five while facing the minimum. Senior Sarah Odom came on in relief in the fifth and struck out five as well. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Philly Irvin walked, ending a potential perfect game for the Cowgirl pair.
