IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State junior Girma Mecheso was named the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for his championship performance at the Cowboy Jamboree, the Big 12 Conference announced today.
The Ethiopia native anchored the Cowboys' first-place team finish with his individual championship time of 23:46.17 in the 8,000 meter race, finishing more than 20 seconds faster than the second-place runner. He was the first of five OSU athletes to finish in the top 10 as the Cowboys finished 82 points better than second-place Michigan.
It marked the first time an Oklahoma State runner has won the event since Mindaugas Pukstas won in 2003.
It is Mecheso'a first time in his career to receive the honor and the second time a Cowboy has won the award this year. Freshman Tom Farrell won the award for his performance at the Hurricane Invitational, as Oklahoma State has now received the Big 12 Runner of the Week honor after both of its competitions this season.
The Cowboys return to action Oct. 16, as athletes compete at both the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
