STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 294 during its third round on Tuesday to earn its first victory of the season at the Ping/Golfweek Preview at Karsten Creek.
With the win, OSU has now won three consecutive Preview titles and has won six times in the 22-year history of the event. The Cowboys finished with a 14-over total of 878 and four shots clear of UCLA's 882. Georgia was third at 883.
UCLA's Pontus Widegren fired a 69 to move from a tie for second into sole possession of first place at 2-under 214. Widegren was the only player in the 73-player field to finish under par at the par-72, 7,449-yard layout.
"There are a lot of times the home course can be a big advantage, but it also has pressure because everybody thinks you should win," OSU head coach Mike McGraw said. "You come in with a pretty good ranking and they expect you to win."
"Most people think that is what would bother you, but to me it is not what other people's expectations are anyway. It is, `what do you think?' Do you think that is what we should do and that was the goal and we went out and won. I think we accomplished the goal we set out for and it didn't have anything to do with anybody else's expectations, which feels good."
The Cowboys entered their final round with just a one-shot lead, but were able to extend the margin with a couple of top-five individual performances.
Coming off a win in the squad's first start of the season at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, Peter Uihlein posted a 2-under 70 to finish tied for second place with Georgia's Hudson Swafford at even-par 216.
The junior bounced back from a bogey at the first with birdies at Nos. 2 and 4 before posting another birdie at the par-5 ninth to turn at 2-under 34. With birdies at the 12th and 13th, Uihlein moved within a shot of the lead, but bogeys on two of his final five holes gave him the fourth runner-up finish of his collegiate career.
Joining Uihlein in the top 10 was senior Kevin Tway, who posted a 72 to finish at 219, 3-over, and alone in fifth place.
Sophomore Drew Page wrapped up his first start for the Cowboys with a third-round 75 to come in tied for 16th at 223.
Freshman Talor Gooch closed with a 77 and finished tied for 21st at 224, while junior Morgan Hoffmann tied for 43rd place at 231 after signing for an 80.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Oct. 11 at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at Columbus, Ohio.
