Austin, Texas -- Oklahoma State freshman Kat Espinosa threw a no-hitter, the first no-no by a Cowgirl since April 24, 2005, and seventh-ranked OSU shut out No. 15 Texas 1-0 here Sunday afternoon at Red and Charlene McCombs Field. The win secured a split of the two-game series and OSU remains a half-game behind UT in the Big 12 standings.
Espinosa, who improved to 18-4 on the year, retired 18 straight batters in the game. With two outs in the top of the first, the Houston native hit Lexy Bennett with a pitch, allowing the only baserunner of the first six innings. Amy Hooks grounded out to shortstop to end the frame. The Longhorn offense failed to get on base over the next five innings, with 11 flyouts and three strikeouts.
The Cowgirls scored the lone run of the game in the top of the second. Julie Ward led off with a walk, but was forced out at second base on a fielder's choice by Tamara Brown. The Cowgirl catcher advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Castle, then scored on a base hit through the right side of the infield by senior Sam Heinlein.
Oklahoma State had baserunners in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings, but each time UT starter Blaire Luna was able to work out of the jam. She dropped to 24-6 on the year, despite striking out nine Cowgirls.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Espinosa walked Hooks, bringing up one of the Big 12's top hitters in Nadia Taylor. The Longhorn third baseman hit the first pitch to left field, where Katelyn Bright tracked it down and ended the game.
The no-hitter was the 36th in OSU softball history and just the third by a Cowgirl freshman. Wendy Carter threw a no-hitter against Adelphi in the NCAA Tournament on May 9, 1990, and Marjorie Johnson threw a no-no against Nebraska in the last Cowgirl no-hitter.
Oklahoma State (41-10 overall, 10-3 Big 12) will travel to Norman, Okla., on Wednesday, April 28, to face Bedlam-rival Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
