WAMEGO, Kan. – The No. 59 Oklahoma State women's tennis team won its second match of the weekend in dominating fashion Sunday, beating Kansas State, 6-1, at the Wamego Recreation Complex in the final contest of a three-match road trip.
The Cowgirls, who also defeated Kansas, 6-1, Friday after losing at Oklahoma Wednesday, are now 11-7 (4-4) on the year.
“I am really proud of our top players for their leadership this weekend and for the way our team responded to a tough loss on Wednesday with a great finish to this road trip,” coach Chris Young said. “We are excited to finish the regular season at home this weekend.”
The match began with doubles play, where OSU claimed two of three matches, including Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Alisa Buslaieva over Kansas State's Antea Huljev and Karla Bonacic at No. 1, 8-5, and Sasha Belova and Sarah Meghoufel over Kansas State's duo of Nina Sertic and Petra Chuda at No. 2, 8-3.
Up, 1-0, to begin singles competition, the Cowgirls carried their momentum to several dominating performances. Shatkovskaya, Belova, Buslaieva and Meghoufel all won in straight sets at the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 lines, respectively, to seal the team win.
Freshman Alexandra Cristello dropped the No. 6 singles match to Kansas State's Petra Chuda, but Malika Rose finished the day for the Cowgirls with a three-set tiebreaker win over KSU's Carmen Borau Ramos to make the final score, 6-1, OSU.
Cowgirl tennis resumes play next weekend, taking on Iowa State April 23, and Nebraska April 24, at the DeBois Tennis Complex in Stillwater. It will mark the final home stand of the 2010 season.
