LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 59 Oklahoma State women's tennis team improved to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 play Friday, defeating Kansas, 6-1, at the Jayhawks Tennis Facility to give coach Chris Young his 200th career victory.
"I am very proud of our girls for the way they competed today," Young said. "It has been something we've talked a lot about and today they did it. We didn't play great tennis but our effort was great and I will take that every time."
The Cowgirls began the match by picking up the doubles point with a pair of wins at the No. 2 and 3 lines.
OSU carried its momentum into singles play, storming to three quick wins to go up, 4-0, and give the Cowgirls their first win over the Jayhawks since 2007.
Alisa Buslaieva earned the first singles point at the No. 3 spot with a straight-set win over Kansas' Maria Martinez, followed by wins from Nataliya Shatkovskaya at No. 1 and Malika Rose at No. 5.
After KU picked up their lone team point with a No. 6 singles win, Sasha Belova and Sarah Meghoufel closed out the dual with wins at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, to make the final score 6-1, Oklahoma State.
In addition to being proud of his team for the win, Young was happy to reach the 200 career wins mark as a coach.
"I have coached a lot of great players over the past 10 years that have allowed me to reach this mark, and I share this moment with them," Young said. "Today was special because of how our girls played. I am excited about the future of our program here at OSU."
Oklahoma State returns to action at noon Sunday as they take on Kansas State at the Wamego Recreation Complex in Wamego, Kan.
