Cowboys Named Scholar Team of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – The awards and honors continued to pour in today for Oklahoma State's national champion cross country team.
The Cowboys were named the 2009 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country Scholar Team of the Year, the USTFCCCA announced today.
“It's a great testament to how hard they worked throughout the season both on the course and in the classroom,” Cowboy coach Dave Smith said. “To perform at the level they did and to keep up with their class work at the same time is remarkable. I'm very proud of the guys.”
The Scholar Team of the Year is presented annually to the program that earns All-Academic Team honors and places highest among the field at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Last week, senior Ryan Vail along with sophomores German Fernandez and Colby Lowe were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
On Nov. 23, 2009, the Cowboys captured the second cross country national championship in school history and 49th overall for Oklahoma State, a number that leads the Big 12 Conference and is fourth nationally.
OSU, which also won its fifth-consecutive NCAA Midwest Region Championship and second-consecutive Big 12 Championship during the season, carried a cumulative grade point average of 3.06 throughout the fall 2009 semester.
