Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's 15th-ranked softball team scored six unanswered runs, overcoming a 3-0 deficit and the Cowgirls defeated the No. 25 Baylor Bears 6-3 here Sunday afternoon and swept the two-game series.
Baylor (19-10 overall, 0-2 Big 12) scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by sophomore Bree Hanafin. Leadoff hitter Tiffany Wesley reached on an error by Cowgirl second baseman Alysia Hamilton and Jordan Vannatta was hit by a Kat Espinosa pitch. The homer was Hanafin's fifth of the season.
A solo home run by OSU right fielder Megan Castle in the bottom of the second inning cut the deficit to 3-1. It was her first of the season and fifth of her career. With one out in the third, Cowgirl Katelyn Bright hit a drive to right centerfield and reached third on the triple after the ball rolled to the wall. Hamilton followed up with a single up the middle to score Bright and make the score 3-2.
The Cowgirls' big inning was the fourth, when OSU scored four runs on four hits and a pair of Baylor errors. After Bear starter Courtney Repka walked Castle on four pitches to begin the inning, Alicia Vasquez came on in relief. With two runners on, Chelsea Garcia hit a single up the middle, scoring Castle and tying the game. The Cowgirls scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Anchors, scoring Amy Graham from third.
With runners on second and third, Baylor catcher Courtney Nieten attempted to pick Garcia off of third base, but the ball sailed into shallow left field, allowing Garcia to score and Mariah Gearhart to move to third. A base hit by Hamilton to left field scored Gearhart and gave OSU the 6-3 win.
Meanwhile, Espinosa settled down in the circle, scattering two hits while striking out seven and walking just one over the final six innings. The Cowgirl freshman improved to 11-3 on the season with her eighth complete game of the year.
Oklahoma State (29-7, 2-0) will host the Missouri State Bears on Tuesday, March 30, at 5 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
