STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State won its sixth-straight game Wednesday, completing a two-game series sweep of Western Illinois with a 6-3 triumph at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Mike Strong picked up the win on the mound, while Davis Duren and Tom Belza had three hits apiece as the Cowboys improved to 10-2 on the season.
Western Illinois (4-8) took the game's initial lead in the top of the first inning. Tom Lilja led off the game with a double, and the Leathernecks took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Bryan Jordan.
But OSU answered with a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning to take a lead the Cowboys would never relinquish.
Duren got things started with a single up the middle and promptly stole second, his 12th stolen base of the season. Kevin David followed with a walk, and a bunt single by Tom Belza loaded the bases for Mark Ginther, who brought all three runners home with a double. OSU pushed its lead to 4-1 when Dane Phillips plated Ginther with a single.
OSU added a run in the second inning on Belza's first home run of the year, and the Cowboys' final run came in the sixth compliments of an RBI double by Duren.
Strong kept the Leathernecks off the scoreboard following the run in the first. The junior southpaw worked seven innings and struck out eight while allowing just six hits to improve to 2-0 on the season.
OSU returns to action Friday with a pair of games at Reynolds Stadium. The Cowboys will host Missouri State at 3 p.m. before a matchup against Wright State at approximately 6 p.m.
