COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 4 Oklahoma State wrestling team battered 15th-ranked Missouri in the lower weights and Cowboy heavyweight Jared Rosholt knocked off the reigning NCAA champion to highlight OSU's 24-9 win over the Tigers Sunday at the Hearnes Center.
With the win, the Pokes improved to 12-2-1 on the year, while the Tigers fell to 7-5 in defeat.
In the featured bout of the day, a second-period takedown from Rosholt fueled his 3-2 win over reigning NCAA champion Mark Ellis. The win improved Rosholt's career mark over Ellis to 6-2 and marked Rosholt's 24th consecutive win this season.
The Cowboys were favored in all of the lower weights and proved why, with 125-pounder Chris Notte opening the dual with a major decision victory and 133-pounder Jordan Oliver following with a technical fall victory over Nathan McCormick to bring the Pokes' lead in the dual to 9-0 through two bouts. Returning to the lineup after missing OSU's dual vs. Northern Iowa earlier in the week, Jamal Parks was an 8-6 winner over Todd Schavrien at 141 pounds.
Luke Silver kept the positive momentum going with a dominating 10-3 win over Scott O'Donnell at 149 pounds. Making that win significant is the fact that it snapped a nine-match losing skid for the Cowboys at that weight class. Following 157-pounder Neil Erisman's 5-2 win over Patrick Wright at 157 pounds, OSU held an 18-0 lead in the dual.
In one of the featured bouts of the dual, fifth-ranked Nicholas Marable got the Tigers on the board with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Cowboy freshman Alex Meade at 165 pounds. The Pokes won the next bout when 174-pounder Mike Benefiel avenged an early-season loss to No. 14 Dorian Henderson with a 5-2 victory Sunday.
No. 3 Maxwell Askren of Missouri was a 5-3 winner over Clayton Foster at 184 pounds and No. 17 Brent Haynes of Missouri followed that up when he erased a 7-1 second-period deficit to upset No. 5 Alan Gelogaev of OSU by an 8-7 score.
Including Sunday's win, the Cowboys have compiled a 10-1-1 record against the Tigers in their last 12 trips to Columbia.
The Cowboys return to action when they host Nebraska at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12 in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

125 pounds: Ninth-ranked Cowboy Chris Notte got the dual started with a 12-4 major decision victory over Eric Wilson. After scoring the initial takedown of the bout, Notte hit a cheap tilt and turned it into a three-point nearfall. From there, Notte got Wilson in a headlock and worked on a pin for about 40 seconds but Wilson eventually wiggled free. However, the escape came after Notte was credited with another three-point nearfall. Notte extended his lead to 10-1 when he opened the second period with a reversal. A Wilson escape to start the third period brought the score to 10-2, and Wilson trimmed Notte's lead to 10-4 after scoring a takedown of his own. Notte escaped quickly after the takedown and when his 3:11 riding time advantage was factored in, the Cowboy senior was a 12-4 major decision winner.
133 pounds: Jordan Oliver continued the Cowboys' early dominance with an 18-2 technical fall win over Nathan McCormick that was stopped at the 6:45 mark. Oliver scored the first takedown of the bout with a slick ankle pick and turned it into a five-point move when he hit a cheap tilt. He separated the score further with a second three-point nearfall. With the two wresters on their feet to start the second period, Oliver caught McCormick in a bad shot and scored a takedown and quickly cut him loose to bring the score to 10-1. Oliver added two more takedowns to hold a 14-2 lead through two periods. Oliver elected to start the third period in the top position and extended his lead to 16-2 with a two-point nearfall. The bout was ended at the 6:45 mark when McCormick was hit with a stalling point. When Oliver's 4:38 riding time advantage was factored in, the Cowboy sophomore was credited with an 18-2 technical fall win.
141 pounds: Back in the lineup after missing OSU's dual vs. Northern Iowa earlier in the week, Jamal Parks fought off a third-period surge from Todd Schavrien to win, 8-6. Parks stormed in for a thunderous double-leg takedown to start the bout and racked up over 2:30 of riding time in the first period alone. Parks escaped quickly to start the second period, then connected on an ankle pick and turned it into a double-leg takedown to go up, 5-0. Parks cut Schavrien loose to cap the second-period scoring, but things evened up in the third period when Schavrien connected on two takedowns. Schavrien's ensuing offensive flurries were blocked off by Parks and when the Cowboy's 2:14 riding time advantage was added on, Parks escaped with an 8-6 win.
149 pounds: Luke Silver snapped OSU's nine-match losing skid at 149 pounds with a dominating 10-3 win over Scott O'Donnell. Silver opened the scoring with a takedown off of a fireman's carry and rode O'Donnell out for the remainder of the first. An almost-immediate escape in the second period brought Silver's lead to 3-0. Silver shot in for another takedown attempt late in the period, but O'Donnell caught him and got Silver in a headlock to get the takedown. Silver reversed O'Donnell immediately to bring the score to 5-2 just before the buzzer sounded. The two wrestlers started the third period in the neutral position and it was all Silver, as the Cowboy bagged two takedowns and added 2:53 of riding time to seal his 10-3 win.
157 pounds: Neil Erisman extended the Cowboys' lead in the dual to 18-0 with a 5-2 win over Patrick Wright. Erisman connected on two takedowns and an escape and came close to adding two more takedowns in the third period, but Wright was able to fight him off with some unconventional defensive maneuvers both times to prevent Erisman from adding bonus points.
165 pounds: Cowboy freshman Alex Meade gave fifth-ranked Nicholas Marable a fight, but the Tiger senior claimed a 3-1 win in sudden victory. After a scoreless first period with very little offensive action from either wrestler, Marable got on the board first when he escaped early in the second period. Marable attacked Meade's leg twice in the period, but Meade fought him off both times to avoid being taken down. Meade started the final stanza in the down position and kicked his way free to deadlock the score at 1-1. Meade threatened Marable with about 20 seconds left, but the two wrestlers spilled off the mat to keep Meade from registering any points. Marable won the bout when he hit a duckunder and turned it into a takedown in the waning moments of the sudden victory period.
174 pounds: OSU sophomore Mike Benefiel avenged an early-season loss to 14th-ranked Dorian Henderson with a 5-2 win on Sunday. Benefiel shot in for a takedown attempt in the first period but after a lengthy scramble, Henderson was able to fight him off and get the stalemate. The first period ended with neither wrestler able to generate any scoring. Benefiel started the second period in the top position and flirted with a nearfall late in the period but settled for a two-minute rideout. With Benefiel in the down position to start the third, he was credited with an escape 15 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Benefiel then shot in for a single-leg takedown, but Henderson got free and bagged a takedown of his own. Benefiel got loose for an escape to tie the score at two. Henderson attempted an inside trip, but Benefiel caught him and scored a takedown of his own to take a 4-2 lead. When his 1:52 riding time advantage was added on, Benefiel was a 5-2 winner.
184 pounds: In a battle of two wrestlers who are very familiar with one another, No. 3 Max Askren of Missouri was a 5-3 winner over Clayton Foster. It was Askren's fourth win in as many tries over Foster. Foster got in on Askren's leg late in the first period and nearly finished a takedown, but Askren was saved by the buzzer. Foster started the second position in the down position and broke free for an escape at the 1:41 mark after a wild scramble. With Foster on top to start the third period, he locked in a cradle, but Askren got loose for a reversal and a two-point nearfall in what amounted to the key flurry of the bout. Foster hit a reversal late in the bout, but when Askren's 2:20 of riding time was added, the Tiger was a 5-3 winner.
197 pounds: No. 17 Brent Haynes of Missouri pulled an upset with an 8-7 win over No. 5 Alan Gelogaev of OSU. Gelogaev threw Haynes for a first period takedown and turned it into a four-point move when he added a two-point nearfall. Gelogaev started the second period in the down position and when Haynes was slapped for a penalty point for locking his hands, the Cowboy took a 5-1 lead. Gelogaev extended his lead to 7-1 with a reversal before Haynes escaped and scored a takedown of his own to trim Gelogaev's lead to 7-4. Haynes escaped to open the third period and after bagging a second takedown, Haynes tied the score at 7-7 and rode Gelogaev out to add a riding time point and win, 8-7.
285 pounds: Top-ranked Jared Rosholt added another impressive victim to his hit list this year by claiming a 3-2 win over reigning NCAA champion Mark Ellis. The win improved Rosholt's career mark over Ellis to 6-2. After a scoreless first period, Rosholt was in the down position to start the second period. He escaped, then bagged a takedown to go up, 3-0. Ellis escaped on the edge of the mat with five ticks left in the period to bring the score to 3-1. Ellis took the down position to start the third and escaped before Rosholt could mount over one minute of riding time. From that point on, Ellis was on the attack but didn't generate any serious threat to the victorious Cowboy.
