John Smith, Head Coach
On Chris Perry's performance
"I think that when you look at Chris Perry's victory, 12-4 over Elliott Hellwege, that is a good win, that Elliott is tough. That is a good competitive guy and a great leader. Chris Perry picking up a major decision over him is doing something."
On the younger wrestlers
"Dallas struggled a little bit during his match from the standpoint of conditioning or maybe how he cut his weight. Jon Morrison and Tyler Dorrell was a good match down low. Tyler Dorrell had a takedown that could have swung that match in a whole other direction, but Morrison scrambled out of it and took a commanding lead. I like the way they look and I am looking forward to this weekend so it can tell me a little bit more. I think we got off to a good start and have something to grow from."
"I think Jordan Oliver and Josh Kindig was a good match. That Josh Kindig is a tough kid. He is a young kid and a young freshman, but he is tough. He is in on the No. 1 ranked guy in the country's leg three times in the first quarter, but you've just got to sustain it and he has to learn to finish. I think Oliver getting a major decision over Kindig is a good win for him. Even though he is young, that is a tough kid."
On his match against Albert White
"I knew it was going to be a tough match. I just had to keep focused. We're both tough competitors, so I mainly had to stay focused and I still have to get better."
On the dual
"I thought the dual was very good. I thought everyone wrestled pretty intense. Nobody gave up anything. Every match is tough. Clayton is just a tough competitor. I liked today's dual."
On how much pride played into the dual
"Pride's a big part of it. You win it for yourself when it comes to one of these. A match is a match and you want to win it for yourself."
On the dual
"Overall, I think the team came out and everybody wrestled well. We went out; people put points on the board. Overall, everybody was scrapping and wrestling through every position, giving the fans what they want to see; it was good wrestling. I think we have a good season ahead of us and a bright future if everyone continues to wrestle the way they did tonight."
On how the freshmen performed
"I think all the freshmen came in and wrestled pretty well. The fact that it was their first match in Gallagher-Iba Arena being in front of the fans, they came out and they weren't scared to go after it. A good example: Matt White and Swan. They went out in front of the fans, they were scrapping, putting points up on the board. I wrestled Kindig: he came out and got in on two singles right away. Even though he didn't score, the key thing there was he kept pushing through the match and kept looking for scores and never gave up. I thought overall as a team, even the freshmen, we came out and performed well and I think it's something we need in this program."
