STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis coach Chris Young has been honored with the USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the Missouri Valley Section, the ITA announced this week.
The award is given out annually to one coach in each section, honoring those who are involved in promoting tennis to their communities using various programs sponsored by the USTA.
Young was considered for the award due to the “Quickstart” program he has coordinated for the past six months. Young's program is designed to teach the game to young athletes under the age of 10 using a smaller court design, smaller nets, and a pressure-less ball for the ease of learning the game.
Last season, Young and Oklahoma State hosted a USTA Campus Kids Day for OSU's match against Texas. Each young athlete who attended the match received a free t-shirt from the USTA.
The program also holds various drill groups for the community, allowing the Oklahoma State tennis staff to reach higher levels of involvement with the tennis community in and around Stillwater.
It is Young's second time to receive the honor, as he also won the award in 2006 while at Wichita State. Young also received the national USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award that year.
