Prior to Oklahoma State's 55-28 victory over Baylor on Saturday, OSU student-athletes were outside Boone Pickens Stadium helping with a canned-food drive themed “Can Baylor.”
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) to raise more than $1,400 for the Harvest II Food Bank. In addition to the monetary donations, dozens of canned goods were collected before the game.
OSU student-athletes spent a chilly morning organizing and overseeing the food drive on the north, south and west sides of Boone Pickens Stadium. SAAC and FCA also visited tailgates in nearby parking lots to collect additional donations.
SAAC, which represents all OSU student-athletes, had several sports well represented during the event, including Cross Country, Equestrian, Men's Golf, Softball, Track and Women's Tennis.
“SAAC would like to thank all of the Cowboy fans for their contributions,” said Erin Prutow, SAAC president and captain of the OSU Equestrian team. “Thank you as well to the OSU student-athletes who adjusted their pre-game plans to make time to help ensure this event was a huge success.”
For the remainder of the fall semester SAAC will be collecting can goods for thanksgiving baskets and toys for Angel Tree Charity to provide those in the community with the means to have a happy holiday season. The next large fund-raising event will be during the spring semester prior to a men's basketball game. SAAC will host a silent auction for the Special Olympics.
SAAC serves as the student-athletes' voice within the athletic administration and campus faculty regarding any concerns of student-athletes. They are a committee made up of student- athletes who act as liaisons between the cowboy community and the athletic department. They participate in community service, fundraisers, host discussions, and are involved in the planning of the student athlete mixers.
Nationally, SAAC offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses as well as regularly provide feedback for legislative decisions in the Big 12.
