Cowgirls Sweep Pair of Games

Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's offense combined for 20 runs in two games as the Cowgirls swept a pair of games against in-state opponents here Saturday afternoon at the Cowgirl Softball Complex. OSU improved to 4-0 on the fall season and has yet to give up a run.
Oklahoma State won game one of the round-robin tournament with a 5-0 victory over Seminole State. Freshman pitcher Morgan Hawkins and sophomore Kat Espinosa combined for the four-hit shutout while striking out eight SSC batters.
Leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart paced the Cowgirl offense with a 3-for-3 performance in the opening contest. She and two-hole hitter Ari Morrison combined for four of OSU's five runs. Shortstop Chelsea Garcia went 2-for-3 in the game.
Gearhart scored on a sacrifice fly by Julie Ward in the bottom of the first inning and Morrison followed, scoring from third on an infield single by Garcia. The same two Cowgirls scored again in the fifth, with Gearhart scoring on a Morrison base hit to right field and the OSU leftfielder scoring on a double to right field off the bat of senior Alysia Hamilton. Garcia scored the final run of the game in the sixth. After singling up the middle, she stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the catcher. She then scored on a passed ball.
In game two of the round robin tournament, Seminole State defeated Rogers State, 4-1.
In the final game of the day, Oklahoma State scored five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as the Cowgirls defeated RSU 15-0. Senior Sarah Odom started and threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. Rookie Simone Freeman threw three hitless innings and struck out seven of nine Hillcats to finish the game.
Senior catcher Ashley Boyd had a career day, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, a walk and three runs batted in. Ward also scored four runs, and transfer Kelsea Schultz went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. OSU pounded out 16 hits off Amanda Edwards, who threw 147 pitches in six innings.
Oklahoma State, 4-0 in the fall, will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, as the Cowgirls host St. Gregory's in a single game starting at 7 p.m.
