OKLAHOMA CITY – Former Oklahoma State stars Pete Incaviglia and Michele Smith will be inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame as two of the five members of the Class of 2010, it was announced today.
Founded in 1989, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame has inducted over 120 Oklahoma sports figures. Members of the Jim Thorpe Association, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame nominees and Oklahoma sports journalists vote on the hall of fame honorees. Basic criteria for induction are accomplishments in sports and identification with Oklahoma.
A standout on the baseball diamond for the Cowboys from 1983-85, Incaviglia smashed an NCAA-record 100 career home runs and turned in a .915 career slugging percentage. In 1985, he enjoyed the most remarkable season in college baseball history, blasting 48 homers and collecting 143 RBIs, both of which still stand as NCAA records.
With “Inky” in the lineup, OSU made three appearances in the College World Series. He was a two-time, first-team All-American (1984, 1985), a two-time, first-team All-Big Eight Conference selection ('84 & '85) and is one of only two players to earn Big Eight Tournament MVP honors twice ('84 & '85).
In 1999, Incaviglia was named the College Baseball Player of the Century by Baseball America, and he was elected into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Incaviglia was the eighth-overall pick in the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft and spent 12 years in the majors.
Smith established herself as one of the top softball pitchers in the world during her time at OSU and as a U.S. Olympian.
A two-time, first-team All-American for the Cowgirls in 1988 and 1989, the southpaw led OSU to the Women's College World Series in '89 and was named to the WCWS All-Tournament Team.
She was an All-Big Eight Conference selection three times and was also named to the conference's all-tournament team three times, including winning tourney MVP honors in 1989.
During her four-year career in Stillwater, she tossed a school-record nine no-hitters, two of which were perfect games, and she ranks in the top 10 in OSU's season and career record books in 16 offensive and pitching categories. She owns the school record for wins with 82 ranks second with 46 shutouts and is tied for second in career triples.
Smith starred for Team USA on two Olympic gold medal winning squads — at the 1996 Atlanta Games and at the 2000 Sydney Games.
This year's Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet will be Aug. 3 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
