NEW ORLEANS – Less than a month after traveling to Orlando, Fla., for the inaugural Bowerman Award presentation, Oklahoma State sophomore German Fernandez has been named to The Bowerman Award Preseason watch list for 2010.
The Bowerman Advisory Board, which is put together by the USTFCCCA, appointed four of its members to make up The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee. The next watch list releases Feb. 9 and updates release the first Tuesday of each month until the final watch list on June 7, the week of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The three finalists for The Bowerman will be announced June 15.
Fernandez is the defending champion in the outdoor 1,500 meters, the only event in which he competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Riverbank, Calif., native is the world junior record holder in the indoor mile with a time of 3:55.02 at last year's Big 12 Indoor Championships. He also holds the American junior record in the outdoor 5,000 meters.
Fernandez captured four Big 12 titles in 2009, with indoor titles coming in the mile and 3,000 meters, while he claimed outdoor titles in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters.
Despite being the prohibitive favorite in the indoor mile and near the top in the 3,000 meters, Fernandez opted not to compete at the NCAA Championships and represented his country at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan.
The Bowerman is named for legendary Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, who helped found the Nike Corporation.
