Former Cowboy Hoopster Dies

Henry J. “Pete” Darcey, a former member of the Cowboy Basketball team, died Monday, Aug. 31 at his home after a battle against cancer. He was 79 years old.
The starting center on the 1951 Final Four team, Darcey was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention selection. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a senior on the 1951-52 squad.
Following his collegiate career, Darcey played one season for the Milwaukee Hawks of the National Basketball Association. After a brief stint in the NBA, he enjoyed a world tour with the Harlem Globetrotters as a player on the opposing team, the Boston Whirlwinds.
Darcey is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pat, eight children (Deanne, Hank, Dan, Mallory, Carrie, Mike, Maggie and Chris), 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered with a Wake and Rosary Service on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (9th & Boulevard) in Edmond. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
