WICHITA, Kan. - Former Oklahoma State golfer Chris Tidland won his first event of the year on Sunday after he eagled the 72nd hole to win the Wichita Open at Crestview Country Club.
Tidland entered the final round tied for fifth place after firing rounds of 67, 68 and 68 to open play at the par-71, 6,886-yard layout. However, he used a bogey-free 65 to finish at 268. His 16-under total was one shot better than Dave Schultz and Chad Collins.
The former Cowboy All-American went out with a 2-under 33 on his front nine after posting birdies at Nos. 3 and 4. Five consecutive pars followed for Tidland before he recorded birdies on two of his next four holes to get to 4-under par for the day and move into a share of the lead. Tidland maintained a share of the lead heading to the final tee with pars over the next three holes.
He stepped to the par-5 18th having made one par and two birdies during the previous three rounds and promptly notched his first eagle of the week to secure the victory.
The win was the second career Nationwide Tour victory for Tidland, who also won the 2008 Albertsons Boise Open. This season, he has made 13 starts and finished in the top 10 on five occasions, including runner-up showings at the Fort Smith Classic and the South Georgia Classic.
Tidland laid claim to the winner's share of $99,000, vaulting him from ninth into second on the Nationwide Tour Money List and moving him closer to regaining his status on the PGA Tour.
