EUGENE, Ore. - Oklahoma State freshman runner Colby Lowe won the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field National Championships Sunday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. In doing so, he earned a spot on the U.S. national team for the junior Pan American Games in Trinidad and Tobago from July 31-Aug. 2.
Lowe won Sunday's race comfortably, clocking a 14:31.27 to win by more than seven seconds over runner-up Sean Keveren of the University of Virginia.
“I came out here and did what I wanted to do, come out and run hard and run smart,” Lowe said. “Coming to the first mile I was ready to go. I wanted to go hard from start to finish.”
Lowe was one of two Cowboys running in the race, as teammate and fellow freshman Ryan Prentice placed ninth in 15:09.98. Not competing in the race was German Fernandez, who placed fifth in the men's senior race on Friday despite being eligible to run in Sunday's junior race based on his age.
A native of Southlake, Texas, Lowe earned four all-Big 12 honors for the Cowboys this year and secured an at-large selection into the NCAA Championships based on his personal-best 13:57.06 in the 5,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.
