Cowgirl Golf Heads To Ohio For Regional Action
For the first time since 2006, Oklahoma State's women's golf team will participate in the NCAA Central Regional. The Cowgirls will be the No. 2 seed at Ohio State's Scarlet Course when action gets underway on Thursday. The 54-hole event consists of 21 teams and three individuals and will run through Saturday with 18 holes being contested each day. OSU will be paired with UCLA and Purdue for its first round and will begin play at the par-72, 6,246-yard layout at 9 a.m. (EST). The top eight teams and two individuals not on those qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be held in Owings Mills, Md., at Caves Valley Golf Club May 19-22. OSU In Regional Competition
The Cowgirls are competing in their 17th consecutive NCAA regional, and have advanced to the NCAA Championships 10 times, including eight consecutive, through regional play. The Cowgirls have finished in the top five in their last four regional appearances and seven of their last eight. OSU claimed its first-ever regional title in 2007 at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. This season marks OSU's fourth appearance in the Central Regional. The Cowgirls have competed in the West Regional on 12 occasions and the East Regional once. OSU last took part in the Central Regional in 2006, finishing fifth. The Cowgirls finished fourth at the 2001 Central Regional and fifth the following year.
Regional Rewind ... 2008 NCAA West Regional
OSU advanced to its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship after tying for fifth place at the NCAA West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Cowgirls finished with a 54-hole total of 882, 18-over par, after carding a 296 during Saturday's final round. OSU shared the No. 5 spot with Arkansas and came in two shots behind Arizona for fourth place. Top-ranked Southern California finished 15 shots clear of the field after posting a 284 for a 9-under 855 total to take the team title. OSU freshman Jaclyn Sweeney continued her impressive spring, running her streak of consecutive top-10 finishes to four. Sweeney fired her second consecutive 72 to finish at 213 and alone in fifth place. Junior Pernilla Lindberg carded the squad's low round of the day with a 71 that included a 3-under 33 on her front nine. The Bollnäs, Sweden native finished in sole possession of 16th place at 219. Junior Amanda Johnson posted her low round of the event with a 74 to finish among the group tied for 56th at 228. Also in the group tied at 12-over was senior Tammy Clelland, who posted a 79 on the day. Junior Karin Kinnerud carded a 79 as well to finish at 235 and tied for 19th place.
Current Cowgirls In Regional Play
The Cowgirls will enter this year's regional with a wealth of experience to draw from courtesy of their three seniors. All three players have competed not only in regional play, but the NCAA Championship finals three times each. The trio led OSU to its first-ever regional title two years ago as well. Pernilla Lindberg posted the most recent of her three career victories at the 2007 West Regional. Amanda Johnson was instrumental in OSU's win in 2007 as well, tying for seventh place. Karin Kinnerud's best-ever regional finish came at the 2005 Central Regional where she tied for 15th place.
