IRVING, Texas -- Ten members of the Oklahoma State baseball team earned 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Conference honors, it was announced by the league today.
OSU's 10 selections are the most for the program since a record 11 Cowboys were named Academic All-Big 12 in 1999. Only Baylor, with 11, had more Academic All-Big 12 baseball selections this year.
Six Cowboys earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 accolades, including senior pitcher Joe Kent, a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major who made the first team for the second time in his career and was the only Big 12 player nominated with a 4.0 GPA.
Also making the first team were senior Jared Starks (Civil Engineering) and sophomores Kevin David (Finance), Tom Belza (Management), Dean Green (Sports Management) and Thomas Keeling (Finance and Economics).
Highlighting the list of OSU's second-team performers is junior pitcher Tyler Lyons, a Sports Management major who earned Academic All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight year. Lyons was a first-team selection in 2008.
Also earning spots on the second team were senior Brett Davis (Economics), junior Neil Medchill (Economics) and sophomore Davis Duren (Sports Management).
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the baseball academic all-conference team consisted of 52 first team members combined with 19 on the second team. First team members are those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. All players nominated must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests, while pitchers are required to have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 20 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
