Oklahoma State's softball team has received an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, it was announced today by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Cowgirls will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., and face the host-school Florida State Seminoles in first-round action.
"This is pretty awesome, getting to go to the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Rich Wieligman. "It's great for the kids, because it just proves to them that all the hard work they put in, both during the season and the off-season, really pays off. It's exciting that the work we're putting into the program is being recognized with a trip to the tournament."
OSU (34-20) is returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season and for just the third time since 1998. It will mark the Cowgirls' 16th appearance overall in the postseason tournament.
"We're so excited about this opportunity, and we're going to go down there (to Tallahassee) and leave it all out on the field," said sophomore second-baseman Alysia Hamilton. "We know that there are three other good teams in our bracket, and we're going to play the best that we can."
Florida State (41-14) is the No. 16 overall seed in the tournament. The Seminoles were ranked No. 16 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, but lost to Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the ACC Tournament.
Oklahoma State will play Florida State Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Seminole Soccer/Softball Complex. The first game will pit California against Mississippi State at 5 p.m.
