Cowgirl Tennis Downs Iowa State, Advances to Quarterfinals

The sixth-seeded Cowgirls (13-11, 5-6 in Big 12) advance to the championship quarterfinals to face third-seeded Texas A&M at 6 p.m. tomorrow. The Aggies downed OSU 5-2 on March 20.
"It was tough," OSU coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. "We knew it was going to be tough. Right now the Big 12 is very, very tight. All the matches were close."
OSU got out to a quick start in doubles to start the match. Maryna Tkachenko and Sasha Belova were up 7-1 when play was halted on their No. 3 court, keeping the Cowgirls from sweeping the doubles matches.
The freshmen duo of Iryna Khatsko and Alisa Buslaieva opened with an 8-1 win over Maria Macedo and Marie Chartier at No. 2 doubles.
OSU's No. 1 doubles team of JoAnne Karaitiana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya quickly followed with an 8-2 win over Erin Karonis and Kara Hickey to clinch the point for the Cowgirls in less than an hour.
Belova got right back to work for the Cowgirls at No. 5 singles as she downed Liza Wischer 6-2, 6-1 to push the
As it appeared the OSU may run away with the match after winning the first set in five of the six singles matches, the No. 11 seed Cyclones countered to win four second sets.
However, OSU turned to its only senior to push the lead to 3-1. Tkachenko picked up 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win over Chartier at the No. 4 slot.
Soon after Tkachenko had won her match, the Cowgirls closed out the match with a win at the No. 6 slot. Buslaieva downed Alyssa Palen 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to send OSU to the second round for the fourth straight year.
Play was stopped in the singles matches at Nos. 1 and 2. At No. 1, OSU's Karaitiana led over Karonis 7-6, 5-2. Shatkovskaya led ISU's Tessa Lang 6-3, 1-6, 5-4.
The Cyclones ended their season with a 10-13 record, including a 1-10 mark in Big 12 play.
