Cowgirls Split Pair of Games at Border Wars
April 02, 2009 | Cowgirl Softball
Sam Heinlein's three-run home run in the top of the third highlighted the Cowgirls' win over the Golden Hurricane. It was her third bomb of the season and made the score 5-0, proving to be the game winner.
OSU had scored one run in the top of the first. Mariah Gearhart led off with a walk and stole second base. With one out, Alysia Hamilton hit a base hit up the middle, moving Gearhart to third. She then scored on a base hit by Julie Ward. The Cowgirls added a run in the second when Chelsea Garcia reached on a base hit and scored on a double by Garcia.
The Cowgirls added two runs in the fourth inning on four hits, including three consecutive by Hamilton, Ward and pinch hitter Jessica Meza. Gearhart led off the inning with a bunt single and scored her second run of the game on Hamilton's hit to right field. Hamilton then scored on a bases loaded walk issued to Heinlein, her fourth RBI of the game.
Junior Anna Whiddon (13-5) started in the circle for the Cowgirls and threw a complete game, allowing just two hits through the first five innings. However, Tulsa got on the scoreboard in the sixth, scoring four runs on four hits and three walks. TU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cowgirl hurler forced a line drive to second base to end the game.
Oklahoma State (27-9) lost the first game to Arkansas 8-0 in a five-inning run-rule. It was OSU's fourth loss in the last five games with the Lady'Backs. Left hander Sarah Odom started in the circle for the Cowgirls and allowed five runs on six hits, dropping her season record to 12-3.
The Cowgirls will travel to Waco, Texas, this weekend to face the Baylor Bears in a two-game set. Games are set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 o'clock on Sunday.
