Cowgirl Tennis Extends Winning Streak With Win Over Texas Tech

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches with a 4-3 triumph over Texas Tech at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
OSU improved to 12-10, 5-5 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech fell to 9-11, 4-5.
“This was an important match to win,” Cowgirl coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “Texas Tech is a good team; they are fast and know how to play doubles.”
The Cowgirls opened the match by capturing the important doubles point. OSU grinded out two close wins en route to the point.
JoAnne Karaitiana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya downed Samantha van der Drift and Kelsy Garland 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Iryna Khatsko and Alisa Buslaieva bested Kerryn Potgieter and Stefanie Peana 9-8 (8) to clinch the point for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls picked up the three more needed wins to clinch the match, but took a big loss at No. 2 singles when Shatkovskaya went down with a leg injury. She injured her same leg a year ago and was forced to redshirt.
She won the first set 6-3 before having to retire in the second set.
OSU won at Nos. 3, 5, and 6 singles. Freshman Khatsko kept to her winning ways for the Cowgirls and picked up another straight set win. She downed Simone Templeton 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot and improved to 18-3 this spring.
At the No. 5 slot, Sasha Belova beat Peana 6-0, 7-6 (0) to score the third point for the Cowgirls. Freshman Buslaieva clinched the match for OSU. Buslaieva picked up a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Potgieter.
“After Nataliya went down, every thing was on the freshman's shoulders,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She was tied 5-5, but won the last two games to win.”
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday against No. 5 Baylor at the DeBois Tennis Complex in Stillwater. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
