UC Riverside
Cowboys Drop Finale At Palm Springs Invitational
March 09, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. Â Oklahoma State saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Sunday as the 11th-ranked Cowboys lost to UC Riverside, 7-0, at the Palm Springs Invitational.
The Cowboys managed just three hits and were shut out for the first time this season as they fell to 9-2. UCR ace Paul Applebee tossed a complete game for his third win of the season as the Highlanders improved to 10-3.
UC Riverside got out to an early lead in its first at bat. A leadoff walk to Carl Uhl and a single by Michael Hur put Highlanders on first and third, and Ryan Goetz brought home the first run with an RBI groundout. Tony Nix followed with a double to make the score 2-0.
The Highlanders drove OSU starter Joe Kent (0-1) from the game in the third inning. The Cowboys' senior southpaw, making his first appearance of the season, walked Hur to open the frame and then uncorked a wild pitch to move him to second. But Brett Davis came out of the bullpen and retired the side to keep UCR off the scoreboard.
OSU's first scoring threat came in the fourth. Kevin David doubled into the right-center field gap with one out and advanced to third on a fly out. But Uhl made a diving catch of a bloop into short center field off the bat of Doug Kroll to rob him of a hit and keep the Cowboys off the scoreboard.
UCR added to its lead in the fourth with three runs. After Brian McConkey was hit by a pitch and Bryan Horst doubled down the left field line, Davis recorded a strikeout. But an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, and Joey Gonzales singled into shallow center to bring home the Highlanders' third run and drive Davis from the game.
The Highlanders added their second run of the inning when Horst scored from third on an error by OSU shortstop Tom Belza, and Goetz made the score 5-0 with a sacrifice fly before the Cowboys got out of the inning with a groundout.
In the fifth, the Cowboys threatened again as Neil Medchill and Tyrone Hambly led off the inning with back-to-back singles. But the duo was stranded on the basepaths as Applebee got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning.
Things continued to go awry for OSU in the sixth. Trevor Hairgrove led off the frame with a shot down the left field line that glanced off the glove of Hambly at third. Belza picked up the ball and fired an errant throw to second that reached the Cowboy bullpen and allowed Hairgrove, who was credited with a double, to continue around the bases and score UCR's sixth run of the night.
OSU returns to action Tuesday at 9 p.m. (CST) with the first of a pair of midweek games against Arizona in Tucson. The Cowboys will also face Arizona Wednesday at 9 p.m.
