Keeling Leads Cowboys Past Arizona
March 11, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. Â Thomas Keeling had a career night on the mound to lift 11th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 10-4 win over Arizona Tuesday at Sancet Stadium.
Keeling, a sophomore southpaw, set a career-high with 12 strikeouts against the Wildcats to earn the first win of his collegiate career. The 12 strikeouts shattered his previous best of five set earlier this season and was the most by a Cowboy pitcher since Justin Friend had 13 against Hartford on March 18, 2007.
In helping the Cowboys improve to 10-2 on the season, Keeling worked a career-long seven innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits while walking only one batter.
Offensively, Davis Duren and Kevin David paced the Cowboys. Duren was 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, while David finished 3-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs. Dean Green added three hits in five trips to the plate.
The Cowboys struck first with a run in the second. Back-to-back singles by Neil Medchill and Green opened the inning, and after a strikeout, Micheal Dabbs delivered an RBI single through the right side to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
OSU added to its lead in its next at bat. Duren led off the inning with a double, and after a bunt single by David put runners on the corners, Tom Belza brought home the Cowboys' second run with a sacrifice fly. Three batters later, it was Green making the score 3-0 with his second single of the game.
Arizona (8-6) threatened in the bottom of the third. Following a walk to Bryce Ortega and a single by Rafael Valenzuela, the Wildcats executed a double steal to put runners on second and third with one out. But Keeling struck out Steve Selsky and got Jett Bandy to fly out to end the inning.
In the fourth, the Cowboys used the long ball to continue to light up the scoreboard as David blasted his first-career home run, a three-run shot over the wall in left field that put OSU up by a 6-0 count.
OSU added a run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead before the Wildcats broke up Keeling's shutout in the sixth inning on Brad Glenn's solo home run.
Arizona managed another run in the sixth to trim its deficit to five, but the Cowboys answered in the seventh. Duren tripled to bring home Dusty Harvard with OSU's eighth run, and a single by David made it 9-2.
The Cowboys weren't done as the hit parade continued with Doug Kroll, who collected an RBI single of his own to push OSU's run total to double digits.
With the score 10-2, Jeff Breedlove came on in relief of Keeling to start the eighth and promptly loaded the bases by surrendering consecutive singles and a hit by pitch. The Wildcats would manage a pair of runs before Breedlove got out of the inning.
OSU will battle the Wildcats against Wednesday at 9 p.m. (CST).
