March 12, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. Â Oklahoma State earned a two-game series sweep of Arizona with an 8-5 win over the Wildcats Wednesday night at Sancet Stadium.
With the win, the 11th-ranked Cowboys improved to 11-2 on the season, while UA dropped to 8-7.
Brett Davis earned his first win of the season for the Cowboys as the senior southpaw worked four innings in relief and allowed just one run on two hits. Sophomore Brad Propst picked up his first-career save with two scoreless innings of work.
Kevin David and Tom Belza paced OSU's hitting attack as each turned in three-RBI efforts. David, Doug Kroll and Tyrone Hambly had two hits apiece for the Cowboys.
Arizona got on the scoreboard in its first at bat when Brad Glenn delivered a solo home run over the center field wall.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the second. OSU starter Mark Ginther struck out Steve Selsky to open the inning, but Selsky reached on the wild pitch. After stealing second, Selsky scored on a double by Jett Bandy to make the score 2-0, and Bandy would later cross the plate on an error for UA's third run.
OSU threatened to get onto the scoreboard in the fourth as they got runners on first and third with one out, but Neil Medchill grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Cowboys finally broke through in the fifth. After Dean Green was hit by a pitch and Davis Duren singled, Ginther delivered an RBI double to right field to make the score 3-1.
Following a walk to Dusty Harvard that loaded the bases, UA reliever Daniel Workman struck out David for the second out of the inning. But Belza came through in the clutch with a bases clearing double to give OSU its first lead of the night at 4-3.
OSU added to its lead in the sixth. After the first three Cowboys reached safely, Duren brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to give the Pokes a 5-3 advantage.
The scoring would continue as OSU again loaded the bases with two outs. And once again, the Cowboys would get a two-out, bases-clearing double, this one off the bat of David to push their lead to 8-3.
UA trimmed its deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth, but Matt Willis came out of the OSU bullpen with two runners on and struck out Daniel Butler to help the Cowboys escape further damage.
In the seventh, Arizona tacked on another run on a solo homer by Bryce Ortega to make the score 8-5.
OSU returns to action Friday night when it begins a six-game homestand at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium with a showdown against No. 6 Cal State-Fullerton. The Cowboys will play both CSF and Rhode Island twice on the weekend before a doubleheader Wednesday against Western Illinois.
The Cowboys open Big 12 Conference play March 20 at Nebraska.
