Cowgirls Sweep Jayhawks with a 6-2 Victory

STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics ) Â-- Three Cowgirls hit home runs to lead Oklahoma State to a 6-2 victory over Kansas at Cowgirl Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Freshmen Julie Ward and Chelsea Garcia and junior Megan Castle each hit a ball over the fence, while sophomore Sarah Odom picked up her 11^th win of the season as the Cowgirls swept the Jayhawks and stay undefeated in conference play.

Mariah Gearhart and Katelyn Bright picked up consecutive walks to start the first inning for the Cowgirls and after two illegal pitches by KU's Sarah Vertelka, Gearhart scored and Bright ended up on third. Vertelka was then pulled from the game and replaced with Val George. Two batters later, Castle stepped up and hit the left foul pole for a two-run home run.

OSU (25-6, 2-0) scored two more runs in the third as Alysia Hamilton reached first after being hit by a pitch. Ward followed Hamilton with a shot to centerfield, her seventh of the season, and the Cowgirls led 5-0.

The Jayhawks (10-16, 0-2) put a couple runs on the board in the fifth inning as Amanda Jobe hit in a run and was followed by Liz Kocon who hit the ball up the middle to score another. The Cowgirls left-hander Odom started in the circle but came out after both KU runs were scored. Junior Anna Whiddon came in and got the final out of the inning.

Oklahoma State added one more insurance run in the sixth as Garcia hit her third home run of the year, a solo line drive just over the left field wall. The Cowgirls picked up their second conference win and extended their winning streak to seven games. Odom improved to 11-1 and Whiddon picked up her second save of the season.

OSU will hit the road this week as they travel to Tulsa on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game against the Golden Hurricane and then to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Huskers for a weekend series on Saturday and Sunday.
