The Panthers (17-7) scored their only run of the game in the first inning as junior Megan Machovec led off the game with a single and stole second. She scored on a single up the middle by fellow junior Jen Larsen.
OSU (23-6) responded in the bottom of the first inning as junior Katelyn Bright singled through the right side and scored on a double to center field by Ward. The Cowgirl bats came alive in the second inning as they scored five runs off five hits. Sam Heinlein started the inning with a double to right-center field. She was followed by Boyd who bunted her way onto first. Then freshman Chelsea Garcia cleared the bases with a home run to center field.
Sophomore Alysia Hamilton got a hit up the middle with two runners on and scored Kelsey Anchors from second. She was followed by Ward who also got a single and scored Mariah Gearhart from second.
Junior Anna Whiddon started in the circle for the Cowgirls, but came out after 1.1 innings, two hits for one run, two strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Sarah Odom came on in relief in the second inning and got the win improving to 10-1. She threw 3.2 innings giving up only one hit and struck out one. Melissa Tillett started for UNI and threw one inning giving up five hits for four runs. She falls to 4-4.
The Cowgirls will play again this weekend as they start conference play when they host the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday and Sunday, both games are at 7 p.m.
