Cowgirls Pick up 2-1 Victory over Missouri State
March 18, 2009 | Cowgirl Softball
Gearhart went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of singles and a triple. After Megan Castle led off the second inning with a base hit, the Cowgirl right-fielder advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Heinlein. Heather Kim walked, and freshman Chelsea Garcia reached on an infield single to load the bases. With two outs, Gearhart hit a drive to centerfield, scoring Castle and Kim.
The Bears cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Jessie Smith led off the inning with a walk and stole second. With two outs, Smith scored on a base hit down the rightfield line by Jana Shewmaker.
OSU threatened to score again in the top of the seventh thanks to Gearhart. With one out, the Cowgirl third baseman drove the ball to the wall in left center for a triple. However, MSU pitcher Natalie Rose came in and got the final two outs of the inning.
Missouri State did the same in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Taylor Farley got a pinch hit and centerfielder Brooke Kempker was hit by one of Odom's pitches. However, Cowgirl right-hander Anna Whiddon came on and struck out Delayna Gary for the final out and pick up her first save of the season.
Oklahoma State (22-6) will host Northern Iowa on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
