Tulsa, Okla. -- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane shot 55.6 percent from the floor, including 9-of-16 from beyond the three-point arc, as Oklahoma State fell to its in-state rivals 86-65 here before a sellout crowd at the Reynolds Center on Wednesday night. The loss was OSU's first of the season.
Freshman Ray Penn scored a game-high 21 points for the Cowboys on 8-of-13 shooting, mostly on drives into the paint. He was also 2-of-5 from long range and made 3-of-4 free throws. However, TU's Justin Hurtt matched Penn with 21 points of his own, and Bishop Wheatley added 17 for the Hurricane.
Oklahoma State never led in the game and trailed by 11 at 21-10 at the 11:30 mark of the first half. Tulsa center Jerome Jordan deflected or altered several shots in the first 10 minutes and finished with six blocked shots.
OSU went on an 11-4 run over the next 3-1/2 minutes and cut the lead to four at 25-21 with 7:51 remaining on a jumper by Keiton Page. However, TU outscored the Pokes 21-10 to end the period and led by 15 at intermission.
Oklahoma State scored the first six points of the second half and cut the deficit to nine at 46-37 just three minutes in, but a barrage of three-pointers by Tulsa -- the Hurricane made five of its last six from behind the arc -- avenged TU's 18-point loss at Gallagher-Iba Arena a year ago.
The Cowboys are now 6-1 on the season and will host the UTSA Roadrunners, coached by former Cowboy Brooks Thompson, on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. The game will be televised by the Cowboy Sports Network.
