The fourth ranked Cowgirl equestrian western team (3-2) defeated the Texas A&M Aggies (3-2) 8-5 at Animal Science Arena on Saturday. The Aggies came out on top in the hunt seat 10-4.
"We are extremely proud of the western team for beating the defending national champion western team in Texas A&M," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "There are still improvements to be made and we'll focus on those when we come back in January. We will continue to improve and look to bring home a national championship to OSU."
Freshman Marissa Dalton led the Cowgirls in horsemanship with a high score of 74.5. She remained undefeated in horsemanship and earned her second MVP of the season. Dalton was joined by seniors Ashley Koch-Kennedy and Suzanne Randolph, junior Margaux Tucker and sophomore Nichole Chirico, who all won their head-to-head matches.
In reining, senior Leah Kuehn and sophomores Rachel Houchin and Christy McElreath all picked up wins for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls earned three victories in equitation over fences. Junior Hannah Beresford, sophomore Jordan White and freshman Kenzie Duckett all won their head-to-head matches. The win was Duckett's first of her career as a Cowgirl.
Senior Ally Blais picked up the lone win for the Cowgirls in equitation on the flat. Her score of 82 was good enough to earn her fifth MVP honor on the year.
The Cowgirls will be back in action when they travel to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks on January 30, 2010.
