Oklahoma State's Anna Whiddon and Sarah Odom combined for a no-hitter in the first game, and OSU scored five runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings of game two for the run-rule victory as OSU defeated St. Gregory's 3-0 and 10-1 here Wednesday night in fall softball action.
Whiddon threw six shutout innings, allowing just one base runner on a walk as she struck out 10. Odom, seeing her first action of the fall, came on in relief in the seventh and despite walking two runners, picked up the save when she forced Jessica Reed to hit into a double play.
OSU scored the winning run in the bottom of the second when Kelsey Anchors scored on a base hit by Megan Castle after hitting a triple to centerfield. The Cowgirls added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Julie Ward, her fourth of the fall.
The second game went scoreless through three innings before back-to-back singles and a throwing error by OSU pitcher Taylor Marcum allowed the Cavaliers to score their first run of the evening. It was the first run scored by the opposing team since Oklahoma Christian scored one in the first inning of the second game this fall, a span of 30 innings.
The lead wouldn't last for long, however, as Oklahoma State scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Sam Heinlein and Amy Graham both singled then scored on a double by Sammy Jo Diffendaffer. A base hit by Anchors forced starting pitcher Stephanie Glass from the circle. By the time St. Gregory's had recorded the third out, the Cowgirls had scored five runs on six hits.
Oklahoma State scored five more in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of two-run singles up the middle by Diffendaffer and Ward. With the run-rule in effect, the game ended with a 10-1 Cowgirl victory.
Oklahoma State (6-0) will conclude the fall portion of its schedule next Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the Cowgirls host Seminole State College. The doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m.
