STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State continued its dominance in the Bedlam Series Friday night as the Cowgirls knocked off rival Oklahoma, 3-0, in front of 1,297 fans at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
The win was the fifth in a row for OSU over the Sooners as the Cowgirls improved to 4-5-0 in Big 12 Conference play and vaulted from eighth to fifth in the league standings. Coach Colin Carmichael's squad is now 10-7-0 overall.
"It's big to win Bedlam and to win it 3-0 and play as well as we did makes me very happy," said Carmichael, whose squad has won three-straight matches. "The effort, the passion, the commitment we showed as a team, everything we talked about before the game they did exactly as we asked them to do. It was awesome.
"As far as the Big 12 goes, it gives us a fighting chance. We're now 4-5 in the league, and if we take care of business on Sunday against Baylor, all of a sudden we could be as high as a four or five seed (at the Big 12 Championship). We're pretty happy where we are."
Annika Niemeier got the scoring started for the Cowgirls in the 27th minute with her team-leading eighth goal of the season, a beautiful blast from 30-yards out to the upper post.
"Annika the last three games has been huge - she's been like an All-American for us," Carmichael said. "That goal was world class. You won't see many better goals in men's or women's soccer. It was a great strike. She's got eight goals now, and that's a tremendous number for a midfielder. Her leadership the last few games has been huge."
OSU maintained its 1-0 lead until the 70th minute when Krista Lopez got in on the scoring action. Off a corner kick from Kyndall Treadwell, Lopez delivered a shot that OU goalie Kelsey Devonshire deflected. But the ball ricocheted off a Sooner defender and into the goal to give Lopez her second goal of the season.
The Cowgirls' final goal of the night came in the 75th minute and marked the first-career goal for Alison Farrell. After Niemeier sent a pass from Treadwell to Farrell, the redshirt freshman sent a shot from 10-yards out past a diving Devonshire to put OSU up, 3-0. Treadwell recorded her second assist of the game on the play, while Niemeier also notched an assist.
OSU dominated the final statistics, including holding an 18-7 advantage on shots and a 5-3 edge on corner kicks, and freshman AD Franch recorded her Big 12-leading seventh shutout of the season in goal for the Cowgirls.
OSU will take on Baylor Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in its Big 12 finale. The Cowgirls will be wearing special pink jerseys in support of the battle against breast cancer.
