Oklahoma State's Homecoming weekend began with a bang Friday night as OSU celebrated Homecoming & Hoops, combining the nation's largest homecoming with the beginning of the basketball season.
The evening began with several campus organizations showing off their talents, from dancing to drumming to singing. The 2009-10 version of the Cowgirl basketball team was introduced and followed with an eight-minute scrimmage.
The Orange squad won handily, 10-4 behind six points by junior-college transfer Lakyn Garrison. The 5-5 guard was 3-of-3 from the floor and also had a steal. Precious Robinson, a juco transfer from Central Arizona College, added two points and three rebounds, while freshman LaSharra Riley chipped in two points and grabbed two boards. Cowgirl senior Megan Byford scored all four points for the Black team.
After the women's scrimmage, the Cowboy Basketball team for this season was introduced, and began an impromptu slam-dunk competition during layup drills. The competition ended quickly, however, when Cowgirl freshman Toni Young intervened and slammed one home.
Once the men's intrasquad scrimmage began, it was a back-and-forth battle that eventually the Orange team won, 16-14. The 10-minute running clock was no match for the up-and-down game that has become commonplace under Coach Travis Ford.
Senior guard Obi Muonelo led all scorers with six points while also dishing out three assists for the Black squad. Preseason All-Big 12 selection James Anderson added four points while freshman guard Fred Gulley had a game-high five rebounds, sharing the honor with freshman center Torin Walker.
Keiton Page scored a team-high five points for the Orange while transfer Matt Pilgrim added four with two thunderous dunks.
Practice for both teams officially begins Saturday. The Cowboy open exhibition play on Nov. 7 as they host Central Oklahoma, while the women will host their lone exhibition contest on Nov. 10, playing Washburn.
