Cowgirls Remain Undefeated With 4-0 Win Over Rice
September 06, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Kasey Langdon recorded a pair of goals to lead Oklahoma State to a 4-0 win over Rice in front of 1,388 fans in OSU's home opener Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
With the win, the 17th-ranked Cowgirls improved to 3-0-0 on the season as they racked up 28 shots and recorded their second shutout of the year.
“It was a good game for us against a good Rice team,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “They made it hard for us, and the first half was tight before we were able to pull away in the second half.
“We played really good soccer at times, and I'm really happy with the performance.”
OSU netted its first goal in the 18th minute. Following a scramble for a loose ball in the box, Langdon gained control and sent a shot past Rice goalkeeper Meghan Erkel for a 1-0 lead.
Langdon wasn't done as she recorded her second goal of the night and third of the season at the 35:22 mark, receiving an assist from Katie Richardson to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead going into intermission.
In the second half, OSU continued to create offensive opportunities and got back on the scoreboard when Krista Lopez scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 59th minute. After a shot by Siera Strawser hit the crossbar, Lopez tracked down the ball and drilled a shot into the net to put the Cowgirls up 3-0.
OSU's final goal of the night again came after a Strawser shot hit the crossbar. This time it was Yolanda Odenyo corralling the loose ball and sending a shot past the goalie. Strawser was credited with her second assist of the night, while Odenyo's goal was her second of the season.
Carmichael highlighted two positives from a match in which 23 Cowgirls got into the action, and OSU outshot the Owls by a 28-6 margin.
“We created a lot of chances,” Carmichael said. “Every time we attacked, we really looked dangerous, and that's really encouraging.
“The other thing is the depth that we have. We can make changes, and sometimes our level even goes up instead of dropping. The depth we have is making things a lot easier for us this year.”
Erin Stigler and Kaitlyn Gustaves combined for the shutout in goal for the Cowgirls as Rice fell to 2-1-0 on the season.
OSU returns to action Sunday when it hosts Northwestern State at 1 p.m.
