Cowgirl Soccer Improves To 4-0
September 08, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State continued its dominance on both ends of the field and remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Northwestern State Sunday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
The 17th-ranked Cowgirls outshot NSU, 36-2, in the contest as they improved to 4-0-0 on the season. The 36 shots tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in school history.
The shutout marked OSU's third in four games this season as the Cowgirls have outscored their opponents by a 15-1 margin. Erin Stigler and Kaitlyn Gustaves combined for the shutout in goal against the Lady Demons, with each goalie playing a half.
“Our defense is playing really well,” said OSU forward Kasey Langdon. “Minnie (Mercado) has played a big role on our defense, and our defense has pretty much shut down the offenses that we've played.”
OSU head coach Colin Carmichael was pleased with his team's effort Sunday but knows the competition will get tougher.
“We've been playing very good, but we've got some bigger tests to come,” Carmichael said. “Our (physical) shape is good, our kids are working hard and we're pretty hard to break down.
“But we also know the bigger, better teams are coming, and we'll see how well we hold up against those.”
OSU netted its first goal at the 11:21 mark as Kasey Langdon continued her strong offensive play with a goal from 12 yards out off an assist from Kyndall Treadwell. The goal was Langdon's fourth of the season, which ties her for the team lead, and raised her season point total to 10, which is also tied for tops on the Cowgirls.
“(Langdon) has been playing great,” Carmichael said. “She really worked hard in the offseason on her fitness level, and she's been able to give us more minutes and more quality minutes.
“She's a lot stronger and fitter this year, and it's really paying dividends for her.”
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, NSU took its first shot of the game just 43 seconds out of the intermission. But Gustaves made a save on the Kayla King shot on what proved to be the Lady Demons' best opportunity of the day to score.
OSU added to its lead in the 51st minute, this time getting an unassisted goal from Treadwell as the freshman blasted a shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out. The goal also marked Treadwell's fourth of the season and brought her season point total to 10.
The Cowgirls' final score of the day came in the 76th minute off of a corner kick from Krista Lopez, who sent a shot into the box that Yolanda Odenyo headed past NSU goalie Lindy Strahan for her third goal of the season.
OSU returns to action Friday when it travels to Louisville to take on the Cardinals at 6 p.m. The Cowgirls will also be in action Sunday at Xavier.
