Cowgirl Softball Begins Fall Season

STLLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team will begin its 2008 fall season with a double-header against Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
After losing two seniors from the 2008 season, the Cowgirls will return 12 players, including starters Mariah Gearhart, Alysia Hamilton, Breana Casaus, Jessica Meza, Heather Kim, Katelyn Bright, Megan Castle and Ashley Boyd.
Gearhart and Hamilton will begin their sophomore seasons after having an award-winning freshman year. The middle infield duo both earned second-team All-Big 12 honors as well as a selection for Hamilton to the All-Region team. Hamilton led the team with her .344 batting average and Gearhart was right behind her with a .331 clip. The shortstop and second-baseman also led the team in hits with 53 a piece.
Returning in the circle for the Cowgirls is junior Anna Whiddon and sophomore Sarah Odom. Whiddon finished 2008 with a 10-9 record, a 2.02 earned run average, nine complete games and 117 strikeouts.
The Cowgirls will fill out the roster with one transfer and five freshmen. Alex Villalobos, a right-handed pitcher, transferred to Oklahoma State after playing one season at Central Arizona College where she finished with a 26-7 record, a 1.53 ERA and 181 strikeouts.
Among the freshman are Kelsey Anchors from Washington state and Julie Ward from California. Three native Oklahomans will be joining the Cowgirls, including Tamara Brown and Sammy Jo Diffendaffer, both from Sentinel, and Chelsea Garcia from Moore. Garcia was a part of the Class 6A State Championship team in 2005 and 2007 and she finished her senior season with a .447 batting average, 43 RBIs and 43 runs scored.
OSU's fall season will include scrimmages with Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, Carl Albert at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Seminole State College at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7th. The Cowgirls will finish the exhibition season at the Arkansas Fall Invitational in Fayetteville on Saturday, October 11th, where they will play Northeastern State and Arkansas.
