LAS CRUCES, N.M. ÂOklahoma State tennis players Nataliya Shatkovskaya and JoAnne Karaitiana advanced through the semifinals on Saturday at the Aggie Fall Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., putting them in position to face each other in the finals.
Shatkovskaya, a junior from Minsk, Belarus, won decisively in straight sets against New Mexico State's Isabela Kulaif, 6-2, 6-0. Teammate Karaitiana convincingly defeated Isabela Kulaif, also of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-3.
The duo continued their dominance in doubles play with an 8-5 victory over UTEP's Weronika Bloczynska and Megan Pritchard. Fellow doubles teammates Galina Semenova and Maryna Trachenko also won their doubles match against Arizona's tandem of Jane Huh and Ariane Masschelein, 8-3, to advance to face their teammates in the finals.
In singles, Semenova advanced to the semifinals after an impressive quarterfinal win, but faced trouble against New Mexico State's Paulina Zuniga in the white bracket. After winning the first set 6-2, Semenova dropped the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
“The girls are performing well,” OSU head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “I am very pleased because Arizona is a good tennis school, and we stepped up against them.”
The OSU doubles teams will face each other in the finals match tomorrow. Although Shatkovskaya and Karaitiana were slated to play each other in the singles final, they have decided to change opponents in order to face different competitors.
