Cowgirl Equestrian Begins 2008-09 Campaign
September 16, 2008 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER, Okla. Â The Oklahoma State Equestrian team will begin its season Saturday against SMU with a show beginning at 10 a.m. at the Animal Science Arena in Stillwater.
Saturday's show is an English-only event and will feature a series of head-to-head matchups. The team accumulating the most head-to-head victories will win the overall match. In the event of a tie, the victor will be determined by total points. In addition, there will be an individual award for the most valuable player in each discipline.
“While this is the earliest we have started the season, I am impressed with where the students are right now,” said OSU associate head coach Suzanne Flaig. “We have worked hard to prepare in the short few weeks we have had since the start of school, and I will be looking to my upperclassmen to lead the way.
“We hope to start the season off with a strong showing to set the tone for the rest of the year and also to see what areas we need to concentrate on for improvement.”
OSU will be represented by 13 riders on Saturday. The demo riders for the Cowgirls will be senior Jaclyn Osterstock, junior Jessica O'Donnell and sophomore Caroline Eich.
For equitation over fences, the Cowgirls will be led by seniors Devon Smithburg and Jaclyn Osterstock, along with junior Ally Blais and sophomores Hannah Beresford, Erin Prutow and alternate Alice White.
In equitation on the flat, the Cowgirls are led by all upperclassmen. Seniors Charlotte Collingsworth, Sam Collingsworth, Sarah Summers and Osterstock and juniors Jen McLaughlin and Blais will all show in equitation on the flat. In ancillary for the flat discipline, sophomore Laura Conely and freshman Sarah Brown will show.
The Cowgirl English team is coming off the momentum of earning the top seed in the Varsity Equestrian National Tournament last March. The Cowgirls also captured last season's Central Championship.
