Kuehn Claims NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship Title

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma State's Leah Kuehn captured the title at the 2008 NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship Saturday at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.
Kuehn, who will be a junior on the OSU equestrian team next season, was awarded a Morrison bronze trophy for her efforts.
With a score of 220, Kuehn edged Ohio State's Keith Ceddia (219) to claim the title. She became the first OSU reiner since Kristin Dickerson in 2003 to win the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship, which is comprised of the top 12 collegiate reiners in the nation.
“(Kuehn) rode the horse like it was her own and really impressed the judges,” said OSU equestrian head coach Larry Sanchez. “(220) is a really good score, especially on a horse that you've had only five minutes to warm up on.”
Kuehn's OSU teammate, Rachell Shobe, also competed in the event and finished fifth with a score of 216. Shobe will also be a junior for the Cowgirls next season.
“We've had riders in this event every year, and it's exciting to win it again,” Sanchez said. “Having two girls who competed who are both heading into their junior years, it's great to know that we'll have them for two more years.
“They are both huge assets to our team and doing well (at the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship) does a lot for a person's confidence. Hopefully, the experience will be something that will help propel our team to a national championship.”
