Cowgirl Softball Wraps up Regular Season in Lubbock
May 03, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State is 25-23 overall this season and 8-8 in Big 12 Conference action. The Cowgirls are currently tied for fourth place in the Big 12 standings with Texas (9-9 Big 12 record). A sweep this weekend would push OSU into sole possession of fourth place, while a split would tied the Cowgirls with Texas for fourth. A sweep by the Red Raiders would drop OSU into sixth place, as Tech is currently 21-34 and 7-9 in league play.
Oklahoma State is led at the plate by a pair of freshmen. Second baseman Alysia Hamilton is batting .350 and leads the team in runs scored with 32. Shortstop Mariah Gearhart is hitting at a .342 clip and leads the team in hits with 51 and stolen bases, going 24-of-27 on the basepaths. Senior Kim Kaye leads the team with 13 home runs and 36 runs batted in. She is currently tied for second place in school history for home runs in a season and career (26). One more round-tripper will tie her for the school record.
OSU is 25-9 all-time against Texas Tech, including a 10-3 mark in Lubbock. After a 10-year hiatus from the sport, the Red Raiders resurrected the program for entry into the Big 12 in 1996. Since then, the Cowgirls are 20-9 vs. Tech on the softball diamond.
Should Oklahoma State win at least one game this weekend, the Cowgirls will face Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Two losses against the Red Raiders would drop the Cowgirls to sixth place where they would play third-seeded Missouri at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The winner of the Big 12 Championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
