May 24, 2008 | Cowgirl Golf
For the second consecutive season, junior Pernilla Lindberg was named a first-team pick for the Duramed FUTURES Tour NGCA All-America squad. Lindberg is the first Cowgirl in more than 20 years to be named a two-time selection to the first team. The Bollnäs, Sweden, native joins Robin Hood, who was a member of the first team in 1986 and 1987.
Lindberg competed in 12 events this season for the Cowgirls, finishing in the top 10 on six occasions. Three of those top 10s came in the first three events of the year, highlighted by a tie for third in the season opener at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Lindberg also tied for eighth place at the NCAA Preview and finished fourth at the Tar Heel Invitational.
The spring slate saw Lindberg string together three-straight top 10s as well. After tying for fifth at the UCF Challenge, she produced her best finish at the Donnis Thompson Invitational, coming in as the event's runner-up. Lindberg closed out her run with an eighth-place tie at the Ping/ASU Invitational.
Through three seasons, the 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year has tallied a 73.88 stroke average, the lowest in school history, after finishing this past year at 73.43 strokes per round.
Freshman Jaclyn Sweeney was named an honorable mention All-America pick despite having just one semester of college experience under her belt. The Andover, Mass., native joined the program in time for the spring campaign and competed in eight events for the Cowgirls.
In just her second collegiate start, Sweeney posted a runner-up finish at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational while helping the Cowgirls to the first of their three team titles this spring. After tying for seventh at the Donnis Thompson Invitational, Sweeney followed with another seventh-place finish at the Ping/ASU Invitational.
Sweeney then logged her first career victory at the Big 12 Championship, becoming the first freshman in conference history to claim medalist honors. In the process, the 2008 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year helped the Cowgirls to a 27-shot victory and their league-best sixth Big 12 crown.
In addition, Sweeney was selected to the All-West Region squad following her fifth-place showing at the NCAA West Regional in Lincoln, Calif.
