Cowgirl Golfers Earn All-Conference Honors
May 02, 2008 | Cowgirl Golf
Chosen by the league's coaches, senior Tammy Clelland, juniors Karin Kinnerud and Pernilla Lindberg as well as freshman Jaclyn Sweeney were all named to the squad. OSU swept the league's individual awards as well, claiming the Big 12's player of the year, newcomer of the year and coach of the year.
Lindberg was tabbed as the league's top player after putting together a season that includes six top-10 finishes in 10 starts. The Bollnäs, Sweden native has one runner-up finish to her credit and has been the squad's top finisher on six occasions. A first-team All-American in 2007, Lindberg is currently ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
The 2006 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Lindberg becomes the third Cowgirl to earn player of the year honors, joining three-time selection Maria Bodén and Annie Thurman-Young.
The 2008 Big 12 individual champion, Sweeney was named the conference newcomer of the year despite having only one semester of college golf under her belt. The Andover, Mass., native enrolled at OSU for the spring semester and has competed in six events. In addition to her four-shot victory at the conference tournament, Sweeney posted a runner-up finish at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational and has placed among the top 10 in each of her last three outings.
Sweeney is the sixth Cowgirl to be named the league's top newcomer.
In her third season at the helm of the OSU program, Matthews has directed the Cowgirls to three team titles during the spring, including the squad's first conference championship under her direction. OSU broke through with its first win of the year at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational before recording a 13-shot triumph at the Donnis Thompson Invitational.
Matthews' selection as coach of the year is her first and marks the fourth time an OSU coach has earned the distinction.
Clelland is in her first year with the OSU program after transferring from Toledo. The Taupo, New Zealand native has made 10 starts this season and has three top 10s to her credit, including a sixth-place showing at the Big 12 Championship.
For Kinnerud, the honor marks the third consecutive year she has received all-conference honors and the second consecutive season she has been a first-team pick. A native of Norrköping, Sweden, she has been in the top five in two of her last three outings after finishing as the runner-up to Sweeney at the Big 12 Championship last weekend.
The Cowgirls will return to action on May 8 when they begin play at the NCAA West Regional in Lincoln, Calif.
