Cowgirl Softball Runs Past Texas, 8-1
April 05, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
The Cowgirls got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third. Mariah Gearhart walked and was followed by Katelyn Bright's base hit. Gearhart scored on a single by senior Kim Kaye to centerfield.
Gearhart was 5-for-5 on plate appearances with two hits, two hit by pitches and a walk. She also scored three runs and had one stolen base, moving her into the top five on the single-season list with 20. That total also ranks 10th for a Cowgirl career. Kaye went 2-for-4 in the game.
OSU added three runs in the fourth on three hits. With the bases loaded, pinch runner Sarah Carriger scored from third on a passed ball, although she would've eventually scored as Bright walked. Two more runs scored on a single up the middle by Alysia Hamilton.
Oklahoma State put the game out of reach in the sixth as the Cowgirls scored four more runs to make it 8-0. Back-to-back RBI singles by Megan Castle and Heather Kim highlighted the inning.
Texas broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when pinch runner MicKayla Padilla scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Melone.
The Longhorn pitching staff gave up five walks, hit five Cowgirl batters and had three wild pitches in the game. OSU left nine runners on base.
The Cowgirls have now won four-straight games and five of their last six. OSU has won three of the last four contests against the Longhorns.
Oklahoma State (19-17 overall, 3-2 Big 12) and Texas (18-14-2, 4-3) will face off again on Sunday at noon.
