Cowgirls Shut Out 6-0 by Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Jayhawks scored five runs in the third and added another in the sixth to beat the Cowgirls 6-0 in Lawrence on Sunday afternoon.
The Cowgirls (25-23, 8-8) started the game with two hits in the first inning by Katelyn Bright and Alysia Hamilton. However the next two batters popped out and the runners were left on base. Again in the second the Cowgirls left three runners on base without scoring.
And in the third, Kim Kaye got a hit up the middle and was followed by Megan Castle who reached first after being hit by a pitch. However the clutch hits didn't come in and they were also stranded on base.
Sophomore Anna Whiddon started in the circle for the Cowgirls and gave up three hits for two earned runs while striking out one and walking two. Two of the
Sara Ramirez started off the inning for the Jayhawks and reached base on a throwing error by Cowgirl third baseman Jessica Meza and advanced to second. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Amanda Jobe walked and then stole second before Dougie McCaulley got a hit to shortstop and then everyone advanced after the ball was overthrown to first.
Val Chapple was the next Jayhawk to reach base with a fielder's choice that scored Jobe. Liz Kocon then singled to centerfield and both McCaulley and Chapple scored.
After those four runs scored, freshman pitcher Sarah Odom came in to relieve Whiddon. Another Cowgirl error and Jayhawk run later, the inning was over.
The Jayhawks (35-16, 5-9) scored one more run in the fifth as Jobe, who reached on a hit, scored on a passed ball.
Odom threw the remainder of the game giving up only one hit and striking out one. However Whiddon received the loss and dropped to 10-8 on the season.
