Cowgirl Softball Runs Past Jayhawks, 8-1
April 26, 2008 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State scored first, plating a run in the top of the second inning. Designated player Megan Castle led off with a base hit to left center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Kim. Ashley Boyd struck out, and Castle advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a base hit up the middle by Jessica Meza.
OSU (25-22 overall, 8-7 Big 12) increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on a two-run home run over the left centerfield fence by senior Kim Kaye, her 13th of the season and the 26th of her career. The round-tripper tied Kaye for second in school history for both homers in a season and a career.
The Cowgirls upped the score to 4-0 in the fourth on a double by Kim who scored on a base hit by Breana Casaus. The Jayhawks (34-16, 4-9) got on the board when Val Chapple hit a solo homer down the leftfield line.
OSU made it 7-1 in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits, including a two-out single by Castle and a two-run double by Kim, her second two-bagger of the game. The Cowgirls scored their final run in the sixth as Sarah Carriger, pinch running for Meza, scored on a base hit by Gearhart.
Kaye went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Kim went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run as well. Castle went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Meza went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Cowgirls' eight runs were the most scored in Lawrence in school history. It was also OSU's largest margin of victory over the Jayhawks since 1996 when KU fell to OSU 11-3 in Stillwater.
A pair of Cowgirls pitched well against the Jayhawks. Sophomore Anna Whiddon started for OSU and went five innings, give up just Chapple's HR as one of three hits while striking out six and walking one. Freshman Amanda Crabtree threw the final two innings and scattered three hits while striking out three and walking one as well.
These two teams will play another game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
